Prevalent Racism

When Huck meets Aunt Sally, he pretends to be Tom Sawyer. And Huck makes up a story that he came to their house late because the cylinder-head was blown out. Then Aunt Sally is surprised and asks if anybody got hurt. Huck answers that “only” a nigger was killed. And Aunt Sally says “Well, it’s lucky because sometimes people do get hurt.”

When Aunt Sally asks, Huck says that only a nigger was killed so nobody got hurt. And Aunt Sally says it is lucky. We can see prevalent racism in their conversation. They do not count black people as human beings, and they do not think black people’s lives are precious. At that period, white people did not respect black people and thought that black people are just part of their property. It was too common, so even Huck does not realize his racism even though he is Jim’s friend.

White people never felt guilty about treating black people badly or they did not even think about their attitude towards black people. It is very ironic that America is a Christian country and people in it did not follow or care about what the Bible says. It is sad that they did not even notice that because they were so soaked into their culture. They should have followed God’s words saying every human is equal to him.
